The Right Brush: The Secret to a Perfect Finish on Your Furniture
Share
When we start a furniture restoration project, we often think a lot about the paint we are going to use. But there is an equally important element that we often overlook: the brush. Choosing the right tool according to the paint and technique we are going to use makes the difference between an amateur result and a truly professional finish.
In this article, we explain which brush you need for each situation, how to care for them so they last for years, and where to find them in our store.
Natural-Bristle Brush: For Chalk Paint and Wax
If you work with chalk paint (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ or Alchemy by Fusion) or are going to apply wax as a protective finish, a natural-bristle brush is your essential tool.
Natural bristles have split ends that hold a large amount of paint and allow for expressive, artistic application. Brush marks are visible and form part of the charm of the finish — that distinctive vintage, aged effect of Chalk Paint™.
When should you use it?
- Applying Chalk Paint™ with a vintage or shabby chic finish
- Applying wax (clear, dark, black, or white)
- Decorative techniques with expressive brushstrokes
- Restoring furniture with a rustic or aged style
Sizes according to the project:
- Large — tables, sideboards, cabinets, and large surfaces
- Medium — chairs, bedside tables, doors
- Small — details, moldings, drawers, and hard-to-reach areas

Synthetic Brush: For a Smooth Finish Without Streaks
When we want a clean, smooth, and contemporary result — without brush marks — a synthetic-fiber brush is the right choice. Its soft fibers distribute the paint evenly and do not leave streaks or texture.
It is the ideal brush for Fusion Mineral Paint and for any project where we want a modern, polished finish.
When should you use it?
- Applying Fusion Mineral Paint
- Smooth, contemporary finishes
- Kitchen furniture, window frames, and doors
- Projects where we do not want visible brushstroke texture
Available in round (maximum versatility) and flat (for large surfaces), in several sizes to suit any project.

Stencil Brush: Precision in Stenciling
Stencil techniques require a specific brush. The stencil brush has a special design that allows you to apply paint with complete control, preventing it from seeping under the edges of the stencil and ensuring a clean, defined finish.
The correct technique: load very little paint onto the brush and apply it using circular movements or tapping motions (the dry-brush stenciling technique). Less paint = greater precision and sharper edges.

How to Care for and Clean Your Brushes
A good brush, properly cared for, can last for years. Here are the essentials:
For water-based paints (Chalk Paint™, Fusion Mineral Paint):
- Rinse immediately after use
- Let the brush soak in water below the ferrule for at least 30 minutes
- Wash with a little Fusion brush cleaner — it removes residue and conditions the bristles, which is especially important for natural bristles
- Rinse until the water runs completely clear
- Reshape the bristles with your fingers and dry horizontally or hang with the bristles pointing downward
For waxes and oils:
- Initial cleaning with odorless mineral spirits
- Then wash with water and mild soap
💡 Tip: If you do not have time to clean the brush right away, wrap it in plastic, cover it with a damp cloth, or leave it in a container of water up to the ferrule. This prevents the paint from drying and allows you to clean it later without any problems.
Golden rule: never leave the brush resting on its bristles or submerged beyond the ferrule — you would damage both the bristles and the handle.
